We're not going to be able to get all damage out of the trees. For example, Improved Frostbolt, a talent that makes Frostbolt cast faster is essentially a passive damage increase, but it does it in a more interesting way than a talent like Arctic Winds, which grants +Frost damage to keep it from being a PvP only talent.

I don't know that Improved Overpower will make the cut, since you pretty much always want to Overpower when you can so it isn't that interesting a talent. Taste for Blood is an interesting talent even though it's pretty much just more damage at the end of the day. Trauma is not particularly interesting, but it's an important group buff which makes it marginally more interesting that a talent that just passively improves your own damage. Something like Deep Wounds is tough. It's pretty passive but it's also pretty iconic for the Arms tree. If crit chances are lower in Cataclysm, and they will be, then it's not the no-brainer it is today, but I still can't imagine an Arms build without it.

Ultimately, what we want to do is just give players a lot more flexibility in how they talent. Some of the trees currently have a "cookie cutter" spec that says something like "Spend the last 3 points wherever you want." We want to get that feel in all the trees, and hopefully with more like 5-8 points spent wherever you want. We also want to make sure you aren't able / forced to skip over the utility talents just to get the +damage, healing or survival talents.

My comments above somehow got twisted into "We want DKs to be OTs and not MTs." My actual post was that warriors are the most common MTs in progression-oriented guilds and my suspicion is that DKs are the most common OTs, though I acknowledged that I did not have the data to back that second part up.

Now you can't have it two ways here. You can't say "DKs are so terrible that they can only OT," while at the same time saying "Guilds use warrior MTs even though they're terrible because they are either ignorant (unlikely) or stubborn (possible)." I think a more credible conclusion is that tank balance isn't in such a dreadful state that it really affects what tanks groups use. They use the tanks they have or that their players like to play.

Example: I asked a designer here whose guild is on heroic Anub 25 what tanks they use. They haven't beaten it yet, but they're close and they'll probably get it before 3.3. They didn't feel the need to recruit or reroll to get say a paladin MT and druid OT. Now this is a sample size of one so it's hardly a trend. At the same time, I speak to a fair number of players and I think this kind of situation is typical. The relative strengths or weaknesses of the various classes and specs -- including dps and healers here, with a couple of exceptions like Subtlety rogues -- are not a huge factor in who gets brought to a raid. This seems to be true both of those groups that get server first kills and those guilds that come later but still defeat the toughest fights in the game before they are old content. While we don't want to give every tank class identical abilities, I do think DKs suffer from lacking something to fill the Shield Slam niche -- an on-demand high threat ability, great for smacking an add that has just arrived, but that can't be spammed to the exclusion of all else. Rune Strike isn't dependable enough and it is spammed anyway. However, it's pretty easy to conceive (and much harder to implement of course) of a Rune Strike that works more like Shield Slam, but with plenty of threat capable from other attacks. I think DK AE threat is fine, occasionally bordering on overpowered if you can get full use of DnD and Pestilence. wow power leveling zdm.

GameInformer.com sat down with Jeff Kaplan (Tigole) to talk about World of Warcraft's past and future. It's just like any other World of Warcraft interview without anything really new (it's still worth reading!) but there is a very interesting answer here. Tigole confirms that there will be a cinematic just like the Wrath Gate one in Patch 3.3, most likely featuring the Lich King.

It's not on PTRs yet and a minor patch released a few months after 3.3 to introduce Season 8 and the Cinematic is very likely. They could always push the season 8 models and the cinematic in the final version of Patch 3.3 but I don't think they would do that without testing at least the models of Season 8 armor. (And they're definitely not here for the moment)

I don't think we've fully refined how we want cutscenes to work with future World of Warcraft content.

We debate like crazy. We debate the length, we debate the frequency, and we have a lot of theories, but Blizzard is a really iterative development house. I think what's going to have to happen is that you'll see more cutscenes come into the game for us to really refine our strategy with them. We definitely have an eye toward more cutscenes, but at the same time, we don't want to become just a cutscene game.

Even before Cataclysm, in patch 3.3, there's going to be a really exciting cutscene moment that's going to be our next experiment with that.

The problem is some of our implementations (and to be fair, more of the newer versions of these buffs) come with less opportunistic cost, or the talent specs make it easier to include the buff, or it happens automatically instead of requiring player action. Fire Totems changes in 3.3
We like the fire totem changes. It's a new change and I'm sure it will require some iteration before it feels exactly right, but we like the mechanic overall. It's not critical that Searing Totem be an uber form of dps in the same way that Sentry Totem's very existence might offend you. We did a big update of totems for Lich King. They're not perfect yet, but when you remember what they used to be like, they're in a much better place now.

We see Elementals "turretiness" as a slightly different issue, and one we want to fix. No spec should be so terrified of moving, even one dependent on stationary points on the map where their totems are.

Also be very careful that you aren't just describing totems in general as a clunky mechanic. I see that kind of thing a lot, but totems are virtually synonymous with shaman in our minds. If you really, really hate totems, you might not be playing the class that best suits your play style. wow gold zdm.

As we grow closer to the Battle for Icecrown Citadel I find myself examining the lore more closely and with more enthusiasm than is probably good for me as a writer.  It made it infinitely more difficult to decide on what it is I wanted to write about this morning (which is coming closer and closer to being this afternoon).

One of the most prominent characters of the invasions of Northrend and subsequently of Icecrown was reimagined and reintroduced with the development of Wrath of the Lich King.  He was introduced originally in patch 1.11, Shadow of the Necropolis, as the Ashbringer, Alexandros Mograine; a fallen hero of the Human Alliance in the second and third wars, but his redevelopment and reintroduction are what make him a truly rich and unique character in the lore.

The embattled House of Mograine is steeped in tragedy, betrayal, and sacrifice moreso than any other family and generation of characters in this world, and because of their evolving stories I get asked about them a lot, so if you haven’t yet figured it out, today you get the first of hopefully many character highlights in Highlord Alexandros Mograine.

Alexandros is a truly unique character in that he has played a major role in shaping both sides of the conflict of the living versus the dead, the light versus the dark, and his family has completed the circle in two separate generations.

When the Highlord is first reintroduced to us, it is as a commander of the Knights of the Silver Hand, an order of Paladins under Alonsus Faol and Uther the Lightbringer, during the Second War, and he comes to possess an artifact that embodies darkness and the void, a living shadow that he seals away in fear of what it means to the Light.

During the Third War, with the kingdom of Lordaeron on the doorstep of oblivion, Alexandros reveals the artifact to his fellows and implores them to begin searching for its counterpart, an object of pure radiance and light that will surely turn the tide of battle against the undead Scourge; appalled by its existence, however, his peers attempt to destroy the artifact by the will of the Holy Light, and in absorbing their divinity, the orb becomes the very object of life and light that Alexandros had pleaded his brothers search for.  Shortly thereafter the artifact is fashioned into a righteous weapon, and the Ashbringer is born.

What we learn from Alexandros’ fall from the Light and his tenure as one of the Lich King’s dreaded Death Knights is that the blade and the man are one in the same.  The Ashbringer is not simply Alexandros Mograine or the righteous weapon that he carried on his back.

The Ashbringer is corrupted, both body and blade, when Alexandros is killed by his son, and in service to the Ligh King we see that the artifact has once again transformed into the embodiment of shadow, only this time it has taken its vessel, Mograine, with it; not just because it was Mograine that wielded the blade, but because the two are bound to one another in much the same way that Arthas is bound to Frostmourne.

Even when Alexandros is killed in Naxxramas by his son, Darion, his soul remains bound to the blade, pleading with Darion once he takes up the blade to flee the citadel and visit vengeance upon his brother in the Scarlet Monastery.

I find that the story becomes the most interesting when you realize that the artifact itself is neither an object of darkness or of light, it is simply a vessel bound to the actions impressed upon it.  In the hands of an Orc Warlock, it embodies the void, but when wielded by Highlord Mograine, it is a weapon of righteousness.  Heartbroken and destroyed by his betraying son, Renault, Alexandros impresses the void upon the blade once again, and though Darion means to trade his soul for his father’s by sacrificing himself in the name of the Light at Light’s Hope, he succeeds only in redeeming his father’s darkened soul.

Now, when I originally read the Ashbringer series, I too thought that Darion traded his soul to the blade in exchange for freeing his father’s.  It wasn’t until the fifth or sixth time that I played through the Death Knight starting zone that I started to realize that there was more to it than that.  The blade was never Darion’s at all.  During the Battle for Light’s Hope Chapel you can hear Darion’s struggle with the Ashbringer. sfgfeuwqoq

If you are incredibly astute you will notice that Darion is incapable of killing anything at Light’s Hope Chapel, instead of delivering a death blow to anything, he commands the blade to obey him and then switches to a different target entirely.  The Ashbringer is still bound to the soul of Alexandros Mograine, which Darion redeemed when he sacrificed himself to save the Chapel and its defenders the first time it was attacked by the Scourge.  That it appears to be physically corrupted is only that it is in Darion’s possession as an agent of the shadow.

For that reason I think that we have not yet seen the last of Alexandros Mograine; I find it hard to believe that Tirion would simply take up the blade, the position, and the role of Alexandros regardless of his piety.  Does the blade whisper to him with the voice of Alexandros like it did to Darion?  Does it whisper to him like the voice of Ner’zhul whispers to Arthas through Frostmourne?  And if so, does Tirion wield the Ashbringer, or does the Ashbringer wield Tirion?
